The history of André Citroën's surname is quite convoluted. His great grandfather had to choose a surname in 1811, and since he sold fruit, he called himself "Limoenman" or "Lemonman". His son changed his surname to "Citroen", the dutch word for lemon as his father in law thought the name Limoenman was stupid. Eventually, the french schoolteacher of André added the umlaut, since his schoolteacher was french and probably could not stand a non-french sounding name (last bit is pure conjecture on my part).
